Unlike the name suggests 'Sea Buckthorn' is not from the sea. Rather, it is found on coastal and mountainous areas in Asia and Europe and has a long history of medicinal uses and benefits.

“Some Greek historical texts suggest that sea buckthorn’s benefits were discovered by accident. A group of soldiers were confronted with the difficult task of releasing old, useless, unhealthy horses into the wild to die. The horses ran into the distance, never to be seen again… until they came back, coats bright and shiny as ever. The reason for their health turnaround? They’d fed off a natural patch of sea buckthorn berries and rejuvenated their vitality.”

It is likely Greek soldiers who started the legend. The generic name for Sea Buckthorn, hippophae, means shining horse. The legendary flying horse, Pegasus’s favourite mountaintop snack was sea buckthorn apparently enjoyed the Sea Buckthorn berry.  As do we.

It is said the Genghis Khan, as he marched his soldiers across Asia, had a nutritional trick up his sleeve.  The bitter berry, Sea Buckthorn may have contributed to his numerous conquests! Sea Buckthorn is the only plant that contains omegas 3,6,9 and 7. The oil is rich in nutrients such as carotenoids, tocotrienols, and tocopherols. They are loaded with antioxidants like phenols, terpenes, and glucosides; vitamins A, C, and E; beta-carotene; plant sterols; and trace elements such as copper, iron, selenium, and manganese.  Genghis Kahn may not have known the nutional content, but he knew his soldiers were better off eating this orange succulent berry.
