Who cares about their eyes?
When we were little kids we ‘chased’ mercury balls. Not sold as a toy, but if we happened upon an item containing mercury, like a broken thermometer, the ‘quicksilver’ balls became a fun diversion. Until we learned it was toxic.
Some skin care products still may contain mercury, in the form called thimersol. Health Canada does restrict its use, but we still need to be cautious.
Especially in eye care.
“The EWG found several mascara brands contain Thimerisol, a mercury-based element used as a preservative and antiseptic. It has been banned from use in vaccines, but can be found in cosmetics. It is known to damage brain function. The EWG put it like this:
“According to FDA, ‘Mercury compounds are readily absorbed through the skin on topical application and tend to accumulate in the body. They may cause allergic reactions, skin irritation, or neurotoxic manifestations.’ Mercury is considered particularly toxic to the developing brain during pregnancy, infancy and childhood. FDA has banned the use of mercury compounds in all cosmetics except those used around the eyes, where levels are limited to 65 parts per million (ppm).”
That makes sense, because who cares about their eyes?
Products containing mercury are hazardous. Read the labels. If overwhelming, consult EWG (Environmental Working Group)
This toxic addition to some skin care can cause kidney damage, skin rashes, neurological issues, memory loss, depression, irritability, shyness, tremors, numbness, changes in hearing or vision. Your skin does absorb everything.
